MY REBELLION CHECKLIST
BY SUSAN SOARES
Victoria
Matherson's summer to-do list looked something like this:
1. Get organized for college
2. Complete summer job at Dad’s office
3. Spend a romantic summer with Adam
During the first week of her summer vacation,
Victoria’s super planned life suddenly swerves completely off track. Her
boyfriend breaks up with her unexpectedly, she gets in a near-fatal car wreck,
and her parents announce the end of their twenty-year.
Victoria decides to live life messily, to take
chances, and finally to rebel. Taking on the new name of “Tori,” she creates a
checklist of rebellion:
#3 Get an extreme haircut
#6 Pierce something
which she’ll use to show everyone around her that all the changes to her perfectly organized life haven’t affected her in the least. Even though they have.
which she’ll use to show everyone around her that all the changes to her perfectly organized life haven’t affected her in the least. Even though they have.
With the help of her quirky and cute co-worker
Zack, Tori will check off the crazy items on her list and learn what it means
to give up control and be free. But just how far will she go?
My Rebellion Checklist
releases on March 10th, 2015.
Guest post: Behind the scenes!!
Behind the scenes of Victoria:
My book ideas tend to
come from anything and everything. However, this book idea was inspired by my
step daughter. She was sitting on the couch talking about things she all of a
sudden really wanted to do. Like dye her hair, and pierce something, and get a
tattoo. I laughed as her list went on and I said, “It sounds like you’re making
a rebellion checklist.” That’s what sparked the idea.
I knew I wanted
Victoria to be a very type A personality. Always making lists, always being on
top of everything. So the idea was inspired by my stepdaughter that day but the
character herself was also inspired by another person. I love Youtube and I
have my own channel there as well. There is a girl I watch, I won’t call her
out, but she is the most organized, detailed, list-oriented people I’ve come
across. She definitely helped shape a lot of Victoria’s ways of making and
keeping lists and notebooks. I like to buy lots of notebooks with grand notions
of being this organized, but I’m not.
I also knew Victoria
had to change, but not loose herself by the end of the book. This was a
challenge. How far did she go? Would she remain true to herself or get lost in
the process? This was something that I was grateful I had some wonderful beta
readers to read through an earlier draft. They helped a lot with their comments
of what seemed in line with the character and what didn’t feel authentic.
Behind the scenes of Zack:
Zack was inspired by
the love of my life, Marc. Zack’s character is very go-with-the-flow. He’s easy
to get along with. He’s naturally funny. You don’t realize off the bat how
smart he is. (The comment about him saying the word ‘osmosis’ from the book is
something that actually happened) He’s interesting and you want to know more
about it. He’s also got more depth to him then you actually realize. His quirk
of sports quotes was just something I came up with. I wanted him to have a
distinct personality trait that would set him apart and make you remember him.
I also wanted it to have meaning, not just be something random, that’s where
the backstory of his dad played into the mix.
