Phoenix /fēniks/: (in classical mythology) a unique bird
inhabiting the Arabian Desert that burned itself on a funeral pyre before
rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle.
This isn’t mythology, it’s war, and Hendy is left in the
hands of Hell’s cruelest gatekeepers.
His team is killed before his very eyes, and despite his
efforts to save them, he’s captured and subjected to merciless torture—losing
virtually every piece of his identity but his pulse.
After his rescue, he returns home from Afghanistan, saddled
with facing the daunting task of healing his physical scars as well as the
invisible ones—his emotional demons.
Dr. Presley Cole isn’t one to shy away from a challenge.
Embarking on a new journey, she makes it her mission to prove to Hendy that his
life isn’t over; that he’s worthy of love.
Because sometimes even a phoenix needs help to rise…
Out of the Ashes.

I have read one other book by RC Boldt and it was Clam
Jam, (which I enjoyed) talk about a change. This just goes to show you what a
good writer she is to be able to switch up genres like that. You do get little
bits and pieces of her humor in this, but this is very much a story that makes
you feel things, makes you think, makes you want to hug the two MC’s and shake
them at times too.
I loved the title of this book. I feel like it was so significant
to the story.
“You
need to own it. You rose from the ashes. Like the damn phoenix.”
Hendy (SEAL) was on a mission, captured and tortured relentlessly. Once he was rescued he was dead inside, left with many
scars on the outside and inside. He can’t get past the fact that he isn’t the
tall dark and handsome playboy he used to be. He can’t look in the mirror and
he can’t stand himself. Presley is Hendy’s doctor his chiropractor and she
wants to help him heal, not only his physical injuries but his emotional injuries
too. They connect in away Presley isn’t prepared for. She feels a pull to him but
she’s also his doctor and engaged.
Hendy needs to heal himself before having a real
relationship, but the attraction he feels for Presley is taking a toll on him.
He likes her and feels a connection but he knows there is no way someone like
her would ever be with him… and she’s engaged.
I really loved seeing this story develop and the growth
of both of these characters, Hendy had a lot of work to do on himself but he
slowly gets there.
“If
you don’t find a way to love the man you are now-to love yourself the way you
are-then you’ll never be able to truly love in return.”
The way she ended this book was right on, it made me smile;
it was the perfect ending to a wonderful story. I will definitely be reading
more of this author in the future.
